Olokoba: Why we support Peace Walk cancelation

Razaq Bamidele

Comrade Razaq Olokoba, renowned human rights activist and political commentator, has given reasons for supporting Lagos Governor; Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s cancellation of the planned Walk for peace slated for last Friday, saying the governor’s decision was the best for the generality of the citizenry.

Leading a coalition of about 70 right organizations under the umbrella of the Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), at a well-attended press conference in Lagos said the reason for the cancellation by the governor has shown that he is on top of the situation in the country and the world over, stating that, going ahead with the exercise would have portrayed him and his administration as an insensitive government in the face of the advent of the new version of the COVID-19.

According to him, if the new version adjudged as deadlier than the previous three variants has truly hit the whole world, it would have amounted to putting the lives of the participants, albeit, the whole populace at risk, reminding that the dreaded monster is a highly contagious disease that travels in the air.

Olokoba, who is the National President of the CDG, therefore commended the governor for his prompt intervention to forestall what could have been a monumental disaster for the state, as he appealed to all the right organizations to show understanding with Sanwo-Olu, describing those who thought he backed down for the fear that the exercise would not be popular.

Olokoba added that we are not surprised that Sanwo-Olu cancelled the event because of his antecedent as a pro-active administrator, reminding us that, his pro-activeness in the matters concerning the welfare of the people and their all-round wellbeing has never been in doubt before and after the way he handled the advent of Coronavirus in 2019.

His performance during the period, the youth leader reminded earned him local, national and international accolades for a job well done, insisting that both the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO), that gave kudos to Sanwo-Olu on the issue are not given to playing to the gallery as they always call a spade a spade without describing it as an agricultural implement.

Present at the press conference with their members were, Comrades Razaq Olokoba of the CDG, that addressed the conference, JamesAdeyemi of the Black Youth Vanguard, Adewale Oladipupo of theEpe Youth Forum, Omolola Olukayode of the Nigeria Peace Advocacy Group, Adeosun Adekunle of Egbe Omo Yoruba Ronu, Omobanke Razak of the Labour & Workers Welfare Advocacy Centre and Adebayo Oyenekan of the Congress of Progressive Youth among a host of others.

The Nigerian Xpress earlier reported that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has cancelled the proposed Peace Walk earlier initiated by him in solidarity with the #EndSARS protest that shook the foundation of the state last year.

Recall that the governor had invited several notable artists to join him in the Walk, but many of those invited later turned down the governor’s invitation to participate in the rally.

A section of students in the state, especially students of the state-owned Lagos State University (LASU) had signified their readiness to be part of the rally anytime it was organised.
