Ogun senators shun South West leaders’ meeting in Abuja

Senators from Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, Tolu Odebiyi and Bode Mustapha were, on Tuesday night, conspicuously absent at a meeting of South West governors with federal lawmakers from the Senate and House of Representatives.

The meeting was called for the South West political leaders to take a joint position on the review of the 1999 Constitution.

The absence of Senators Amosun, Odebiyi and Mustapha was despite the presence of Governor Dapo Abiodun of the state at the meeting.

The six South West governors were also present at the meeting.

The reason for the absence of the three senators from Ogun State, political observers said late on Tuesday, was as a result of the unresolved political differences occasioned by the 2019 elections.

Governor Abiodun was, however, embraced by members of the House of Representatives from the Ogun State as well as Sen. Adeola Olamilekan, who, though representing Lagos West Senatorial District, is an indigene of Ogun State.

Sen. Adeola joined the Ogun State caucus for the meeting.

Recall that since Dapo Abiodun emerged governors over two years ago, he had tried to consolidate his hold on power by seeking the support of two former Governors, Chief Olusegun Osoba and Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Former Governor Daniel recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a result of his relationship with Governor Abiodun.

Sen. Amosun, a former Governor of  the state, who represents Ogun Central Senatorial District, is believed to have been capitalising on his cordial relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and some members of his kitchen cabinet to remain relevant in Ogun State politics.

It is also said that the trio of Daniel, Amosun and Abiodun are close friends.
