Ogun Monarch Docked

 

For assaulting 73-year-old man

 


An Ogun traditional ruler who is the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, was on Tuesday docked in an Ifo Magistrate’s Court for assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.

Oba Ogunjobi was arraigned by the police on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

The police prosecutor, Insp Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on January 21 at about 11.00 a.m. at Sojuolu Street, Ifo.

Awoleke said the defendant was seen in a viral video assaulting the 73-year-old victim, which led to his arrest.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant unlawfully assaulted Areola by slapping him on the face and ear.

He also said the monarch conspired to commit misdemeanour to wit: assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

The offences, said the prosecutor, contravened Sections 517, 351, and 249 of the Criminal Code of Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

The Magistrate, Mr F. A. Iroko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction.

Subsequently, the case was adjourned till March 6 for hearing.

The Orile of Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who was videoed assaulting an elderly man in Ifo Ogun State, was charged to court today on three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Speaking on the matter, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, assured the public that the police would continue to uphold the rule of law and the core values of the noble profession.

There were criticisms following the video of Oba Ogunjobi cursing the elderly man in tje viral video.

The video also showed one of the Oba’s aides slapping the elderly man which resulted in Nigerians calling on the state government to take action against the monarch.

The state government on Monday announced his suspension and promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
