Octogenarian in police net over alleged illegal arms deal

The Police Command in Delta State on Friday, confirmed the arrest of an 80-year-old man (name withheld) who allegedly supplied guns and ammunition to suspected armed robbers.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, ASP Chucks Orisewezie, said in a statement that the suspect was arrested, following a confession made by a member of an robbery gang in police custody.

“Acting on a tip-off, a team of police anti-robbery squad, led by SP Masoyi Dadi on the March 6, 2019, busted a syndicate of armed robbery gang terrorising, Ughelli, Warri and Udu environs.

“The gang was tracked down following the arrest of a member of the syndicate, through the mobile phone, robbed from a victim,” Orisewezie said.

He said the police had recovered a pump action gun with seven cartridges from the suspect at a point of arrest.

“The suspect led the police to the gang’s armory, where assorted guns and ammunition were recovered.

“The weapons recovered include: two other pump action guns, four double barrel guns, one single barrel gun, one Air gun, two hundred and seventy four cartridges and two bullet proof vests.”

The police spokesman said the, suspect through discreet investigation, confessed to the crimes and also gave the names of members of his gang.

He also said the suspect confessed to partaking in three armed robbery operations in Uvwie, Ughelli and Udu communities of Delta.

The suspect said he does not manufacture guns, but repairs, buys and sells arms and ammunition, according to Orisewezie. (NAN)
