NYSC: Unvaccinated corp members barred from camps

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has said unvaccinated corps members would not be allowed into its camps across the country effective from the next orientation, commencing in a few weeks hence.

Director-General of the corps, Shuaibu Ibrahim announced this in an address to 2021 Batch “C” Stream Two Corps members and camp officials.

He said prospective corps members must show evidence of Covid-19 vaccination before they would be allowed to register.

Ibrahim said the NYSC was being cautious to forestall further spread of the virus due to the discovery of the new variant called Omicron in the country.

The DG also said corps members should forget about a purported two-week break after leaving the Orientation Camp and urged them to use the period to add value to themselves by acquiring skills that would make them business owners, instead of job seekers.

He further warned corp members to desist from night and unauthorised journeys, especially trips beyond 6pm because of their safety.

Despite the reluctance, if many Nigerians to take the Covid-19 vaccination, it is fast catching on, as more people are now taking the vaccine.

This is especially so since the Federal Government and some public institutions started barring unvaccinated personnel from accessing their offices.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was the latest to bar it’s workers without proof of the vaccination from offices.

Now the NYSC has joined the train, it is expected that the awareness is growing and people are gradually overcoming their fear of the Covid-19 vaccine.

In a previous report, The Nigerian Xpress said that The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has denied reports that many corps members tested positive for Covid-19 in any of its 37 orientation camps spread across the 36 states of the country and the  Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to the NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations, Adenike Adeyemi: “Please note that before any prospective corps member is admitted into the 37 camps, they must undergo COVID-19 test. Only those that test negative are admitted; the same rule applies to camp officials,” she said in a statement.

“Those that test positive are handed over to the NCDC for treatment and management. It is pertinent to state that there is a gulf of difference between a corps member and a prospective corps member.
