NYSC D-G decries dilapidated state of orientation camps across Nigeria

The incumbent  Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.- Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has decried  the current dilapidated conditions of orientation camps in some states of the federation.

The 18th D-G also bemoaned the inadequate infrastructure in others.

Ibrahim spoke at the ongoing 2019 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation Workshop in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 36 state coordinators and that of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja are currently participating in the workshop’s technical session.

The |D-G added that some of the camps had become unbearable and called for urgent interventions from state governments.

He said that the NYSC Act placed the responsibility of constructing and maintaining of NYSC orientation camps within the care of the state governments.

He appealed to them to provide permanent camps and upgrade facilities for corps members in the affected states.

He said that the scheme did not have the mandate to build and rehabilitate camps.

“Permit me to use this forum to remind stakeholders that the NYSC Act puts the responsibility of provision and maintenance of orientation camps on the state governments.

“The NYSC does not have the mandate to construct orientation camps.

“This reminder has become necessary in view of the current dilapidated conditions of many orientation camps and the inadequate facilities among some across the country.

“Therefore, I wish to renew our appeal to the state governments to rise to the occasion by providing permanent camps and upgrade the facilities as necessary,” he said.(NAN)
