Nigeria’s  Osowobi Bags Global Citizen 2020 Award

Renowned international advocacy organization Global Citizen has conferred on Nigeria’s activist Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi the 2020 Global Citizen Honour. Osowobi was awarded as Nigeria’s Hero.

Global Citizen with over 10milion monthly advocates is the world’s largest movement of action takers and impact makers dedicated to ending extreme poverty by 2030.

The award is to celebrate and honour leaders who are shaping the world and doing pivotal work to help end extreme poverty. The Global Citizen Prize honours those making extraordinary efforts to lift up the world’s most vulnerable and make the world a better place, and who inspire others to stand up and take action.

According to a statement issued by the organiser of this award, Osowobi the Executive Director of Stand To End Rape Initiative (STER), was honoured as the first-ever recipient Global Prize Country Hero Award Winner for demonstrating a track record of measurable impact over the last years in her advocacy to eliminate all forms of sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria, while actively being a voice of hope to thousands of survivors across the country and inspiring to become active citizens in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Global Citizen Country Hero Award celebrates individuals around the world who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving the Global Goals and championing the most vulnerable. Alongside the award, Oluwaseun will be receiving $10,000 to help support ongoing projects of her initiative.

Earlier in the year, Oluwaseun was recognised by the United Nations Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth as a Young Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

STER Founded in 2014, STER is a youth-led, not-for-profit organization advancing Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), advocating against gender-based violence and providing medical, legal and psychological support to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria. STER adopts a comprehensive approach to advocating for gender equality and eliminating gender-based violence in Nigeria. First, by working with communities to generate sustainable homegrown solutions to the issues of gender-based violence that impact the broader society, then by partnering with local and national groups on systems-level prevention and intervention activities, and finally, by working with survivors of sexual violence and their families to help them recover from the related trauma. At the core of all STER’s programs and activities is the goal to advocate for a society where women and girls are empowered to equally contribute free from violence.
