Nigerian Army tried to assassinate me ahead of election, Wike alleges

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has accused the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, of sending soldiers to assassinate him on Thursday, February 20.

Governor Wike, in a statement made available to PoliticsNGR, signed by his spokesman, Simeon Nwakaudu, reportedly announced this attempted assassination after a meeting with officials of the British High Commission at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday.

The governor said he was able to escape the Thursday night assassination attempt because his security men noticed the soldiers trailing his convoy.

He said: “Last night; the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army plotted an assassination on my life. Thank God, that was not successful.

“On Friday, 15th of January, a day to the 16th of February, the first date for the elections before it was rescheduled, the GOC sent soldiers to cordoned off my private residence.

“Yesterday (Thursday), I was shocked that when I left Government House to see some political leaders, soldiers were trailing me. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t have military security details, he said.
