Mob lynch 2 suspected armed robbers in Nasarawa

Two suspected armed robbers were lynched by an angry mob at Marara Akunza area of Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The two suspects who were part of a five-man gang that took part in a robbery operation in the area, late Wednesday night, were said to have been overpowered by residents before the mob descended on them, beating them to pulp after which they set the duo ablaze.

Confirming the incidence, deputy chairman of the local vigilante group, Mohammed Sabo, told journalists that the robbers arrived the area 8pm on Wednesday and proceeded to fire gunshot sporadically.

“They were firing into the air to scare the people away before they started to rob the shops in the area,” Sabo narrated.

The robbers, comprising four males and one female, ran out of luck however as residents of the area mobilized and accosted the criminals.

In the ensuing milieu, two of the robbers were arrested, with one of them armed with a gun while the other held a knife.

“The people were so angry because just last week, shops in the area were robbed. Before the police could be informed, the mob descended on the two arrested robbers. They were first beaten before being set on fire,” he further explained.

An eyewitness, Haruna Musa, told journalists that he saw the incidence happen before his eyes.

“It was like a clip from a movie. The angry residents pursued the criminals who came shooting into the air. Two were overpowered while the remains three, including one woman, escaped.

” Robbers have recently invaded the area, raiding shops in the area. People were just on the edge and angry,” Musa, 32, said.

When journalists visited the area, the bodies of the lynched suspected robbers have already been evacuated and buried by community members.

A police patrol van was seen at the scene of the incidence, with the local vigilante official saying the police team was drafted after the incidence to maintain peace.

Effort to get the response of the police authorities was not fruitful as the state Commissioner of Police, Bola Longe, could not pick his call or reponnd to text message sent to his mobile phone.

The Mararaba Akunza area is where the Federal University of Lafia is located.
