Miss Health Africa donates 100 sanitary pads to IDPs in Abuja

Miss. Health Africa, Queen Ivory Chidi, on Friday donated 100 sanitary pads to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the “Malaysian camp” in Apo, Abuja.

Donating the items, Chidi said that the reason behind the gesture was to support young girls in the camp who cannot afford to buy pad for their monthly period.

According to her, it was observed that young girls and women in IDP camps resorted to the use of pieces of cloths or tissues.

“ A lot of young girls stay away from school and go into isolation when they are menstruating because they are being stigmatised by their male peers.

“ It is high time we teach young girls and women in IDP camps about menstrual health and proper menstrual hygiene management tips.

“Continuous menstrual hygiene awareness will create more confidence among these girls and there will be no shame while experiencing something so natural as menstruation,” she said.

Ivory said it was of essence to correct the myths and taboos surrounding menstruation especially in rural areas and IDP camps.

She said that there was need to change the negative notions and social norms surrounding menstrual hygiene.

She therefore urged decision makers at global, national and local levels to increase their policy priority for menstrual hygiene management and catalyze action.

The beauty queen urged appropriate authorities in charge of menstrual pad circulation to subsidise sales for girls and women in  rural areas.

Mrs Hajiya Zuwera, Women Leader of the camp expressed appreciation for the gesture on behalf of the women and girls in the camp.

“It is because you care for we the internally displaced persons that’s why you decided to bring pad to us.

“I pray we continue to receive more of such from your group,”she said. (NAN)
