Minister denies scrapping JSS, SSS classes

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has said that the federal government has not scrapped the Junior Secondary School, JSS and the Senior Secondary School, SSS classes contrary to media reports claiming so.

There have been media reports that the government has replaced the 6-3-3-4 with 12-4 basic education model

While reacting to the report, the minister said the reports were not true saying that the new model is still a proposal which he proposed during the 2025 Extraordinary National Council of Education held on Thursday and has not replaced the current 6-3-3-4 structure.

He noted that she was misquoted by a media report claiming 6-3-3-4 has been scrapped adding that the proposal is not an immediate policy change.

“The proposal seeks to migrate to 12 years of compulsory education while retaining the current 6-3-3 structure. A key aspect of this proposal is to eliminate the examination barrier between JSS and SSS, allowing for a seamless transition of students without the hurdles of an external assessment at that stage. However, this is still a subject of consultation and deliberation,” he said on Friday.

He further said that before the proposal is adopted, the federal government will engage stakeholders such as the education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other key players.

He added that at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting, a decision on whether to adopt the policy will finally be decided.

The Minister therefore expressed government commitment to providing quality education for the citizens.

“The Federal Government remains committed to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices,” he said.
