MC Oluomo dares NURTW, as Lagos suspends union, takes over parks

Following the invitation of the suspended Lagos State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union, NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo, the Lagos State Government has suspended the union’s activities in motor parks and garages across the state.

Trouble started when the national leadership of the transport union ordered MC Oluomo to vacate his seat due to alleged insurbodintion.

Rather than obey the order, MC Oluomo pulled out the state chapter from the national body and invited the state government to take over the parks.

Consequently, Information Commissioner, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the government takeover of the parks to forestall breakdown of law and order.

His statement read: “After considering the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State.

“The Government will set up a committee to immediately take control of the parks and garages. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector.”

Omotoso noted that members of were notorious for using crude and violent means to settle scores, adding that the government had to step in to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Lagosians and visitors.

Omotosho said: “There is an urgent need to douse the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership tussle in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout of the situation.”

Thursday night observed the claims and counter claims over the control of the union.

Omotoso noted that the government has a duty to ensure the safety of lives and property of Lagosians and visitors.

The official stressed the need to douse the “unnecessary tension” generated by the NURTW leadership tussle and protect residents from the likely fallout of the situation.

“After considering the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State”, he said.

Omotoso announced that a committee of key stakeholders would be set up immediately to take control of parks.

The government added that the action was taken as part of its responsibility to ensure no breakdown of law and order in Lagos.
