Mayhem averted in Sokoto as youths storm Sultan’s palace demanding death of suspect for blaspheming Prophet Muhammad

The police, in Sokoto State, have successfully averted the breakdown of law and order when numerous youths stormed the palace of the Sultan, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, asking him to arrest one Isma’ila Sani Isah for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on his social media handle.

The suspect reportedly failed to secure a local government job and consequently made the alleged blasphemous comment to register his grievance against the religion.

The protesting youths stormed the palace, carrying placards with various inscriptions, among which read: ‘Isma’il must die’.

However, the security operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of Marina Police Station, Chief Superintendent M. Y. Maru, attached to the palace, successfully prevented them from gaining entry to the palace.

The DPO addressed the protesters and urged them to be calm, adding that the suspect had been arrested and being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department of the state command.

Maru said, “We have arrested the suspect. He is currently under detention at the CID office and I can lead your leaders to the headquarters to confirm.”

The deputy Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Abdullahi, received  leaders of the protesters at the police headquarters and  assured them that the suspect would be arraigned before a Shari’a court on Monday.
