Matricide: Man kills mother over land four months after only brother’s death

Daniel Anokwuru

There is serious disquiet and pain in the family of Anaka in Umunakwa, Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the murder of their mother, Mrs. Grace Anaka, 50. The deceased was allegedly killed by her only surviving son, Nwabueze Anaka, 30, barely four months after the burial of the family’s first son.

It was gathered that she was matcheted severally with a cutlass by the suspect for prohibiting him from selling the family’s only land. According to the report, Nwabueze, with the support of some elders of the community, sold the land after the deceased has refused to give her consent. After selling the land, he vanished from the village, spent one month, only to return and stabbed his mother to death.

A family source, who preferred not to be mentioned, told the reporter that the incident happened during the night on Monday, September 2, 2019. She added that Nwabueze, after killing his mother, also threatened to kill a young girl, who was in the house when he carried out the dastardly act if she dared to raise alarm. The girl watched helplessly as her guardian was stabbed to death.

Our source said: “What you heard is the truth. Nwabueze is the second son; the first son died four months ago, making Nwabueze the only surviving son. The matter is all about land. There was a land they wanted to combine with another family so that it would be big enough for the man that wanted to buy it. His mother refused that she would not sell the land, that the land is the only one left for them.

They were disturbing her to sell the land, but she refused. Nwabueze told her that they would share their own share of money from the proceeds of the land. He also said he would get married and  fence their house from the money but his mother still insisted that the land was not for sale. Thereafter, she was told to go out because as a woman, she could not decide on the land issue.

“The women did not know when they eventually sold the land. How she discovered was that there was a day Nwabueze received an alert from his bank. He told her that the money that entered was not what he was expecting. She asked him what the alert was for. Nwabuwze now told her that they would pay her own money into her account. He left the house and said he was going to confirm the money he received.

After two days, he came back. His mother asked him where he went to for two days without coming back. He started quarreling with her. He just took his bath and left again. He stayed for one month without coming back. They were calling his phone number but he refused to pick up the calls. His mother was praying and fasting just for her to see her son. She was not even worried about the land and money anymore. Also, she wanted was to see Nwabueze alive.

“Eventually, he came back on the night of Monday, September 2, 2019. His mother was sleeping when he knocked on the door. She heard his voice and happily came and opened the door for him. She was happy that her son had returned home. Nwabueze now requested that she should give him food, that he was hungry. That was how she now entered the kitchen to get food for him. He followed her inside the kitchen. She thought he wanted to collect the food from her but he stabbed her in the back, stomach, and rib with a knife. Her intestines gushed out and her blood flowed like a river.  He disappeared again after killing his mother.

“However, there was a girl in the house with them when the incident happened. He had threatened to kill her too if she ever raised alarm. Out of fear, the girl kept quiet. He removed his clothes that were already stained with blood, poured them into a bucket filled with water and ran away. It was after he escaped that the girl started crying. That was how people gathered to behold the corpse on the ground. The police came and removed the corpse to the mortuary. He is supposedly a pastor and preaches around the street with his Bible. That was why nobody suspected that he can do such a thing,” the source narrated.

Another family source, who identified herself as Chidimma, added that the police later arrested the suspect, as he was trying to escape.

She said: “The police later arrested him in Onitsha, as he was trying to escape. He is currently in their custody. We don’t know what pushed him to such an act. He is a preacher and a very quiet person. No one would ever think that he could do such a thing because of his lifestyle. It was the police that took the corpse to the mortuary.”

The Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State Command, SP, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed that the suspect is in their custody. He said in a text message to the reporter that Nwabueze was arrested by police detectives from Central Police Station, Onitsha, in conjunction with Oraifite Division in his hideout at Onitsha.

“The suspect was arrested and the case is under investigation after which suspect would be charged to court for prosecution,” he added.
