Man dies after jumping from 1004 building on sighting  EFCC operatives

Tragedy struck on Thursday when a yet-to-be-identified young man jumped to death from the 7th Floor of 1004 Housing Estate, Victoria Island, after sighting operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
An eyewitness account has it that the deceased, who is a temporary occupant at Block D5, had on spotting operatives approaching the estate, panicked and immediately jumped from the building.
It was learnt that the lifeless body of the youngster was found by residents who heard the fall and alerted the EFCC operatives.
An operative who was privy to the operation said that the Anti-Graft agency had received actionable intelligence on the activities of suspected internet fraudsters in the estate.
The source revealed that the deceased was not the target as the suspects were picked from another wing of the building.
“ The operatives had stormed the estate early on Thursday morning to effect the arrest of the suspects.
“ The suspects had been arrested and were on their way back to the office when the resident called the attention of the operatives to the lives body of the deceased, and the police was contacted, ” the source said.
Confirming the incident, Head, Media and Publicity for EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said the investigation into the incident was being conducted.
He said: “ The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to news circulating in the social media, purporting that a young man jumped to his death at an EFCC operation in Lagos.
“ It is true that some operatives of the Commission went for an operation at the 1004 Estate in Lagos today, February 4, 2021 and left without incident.
“ It was later discovered from residents that a young man in one of the wings of the estate jumped from the 7th floor, probably out of fright, and sustained injuries.
“ The incident is being investigated by the Bar Beach Division of the Nigeria Police.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the police will try to trace the identity of the deceased.
He said: “ Yes. We recorded a case of a yet-to-be-identified young man that jumped from the 7th floor of the 1004 Estate today at about 8.45 a.m. when operatives of the EFCC were on operation at the Estate.
“ The deceased was not even a target of the operatives. And he was a guest in the house. It’s quite unfortunate. We will try and trace his identity so as to relay the incident to the family and take the necessary police action.”
