Look for natural left wingers, Disu tells Rohr

After making a critical assessment of the performance of the Super Eagles at the just concluded AFCON in Egypt, former Technical Director of Nigerian Football Federation, Coach Tunde Disu, has declared that unless Nigeria gets natural left wingers, the national team will continue to post a poor performance at international competitions.

Disu told The Nigerian Xpress Sports yesterday, that he wants to see the Super Eagles technical crew beam their searchlight on getting such  players to make the team play not only entertaining football  but also reduce pressure on the defence and make the work of strikers easier.

“The Super Eagles deserves kudos for getting to the semi- finals of the just concluded AFCON but something lacking in that team was a natural left winger. It was because of this that Ahmed Musa who operates from the right was drafted to play the role of left winger but we all saw that he couldn’t click in that role and found  it  difficult to lay the necessary passes and pull outs for strikers,” the former Flying Eagles handler stated.

“When you also  look at the defence, you will discover that both Kenneth Omeruo and William Troost- Ekong  are natural right leg players who were made to play  double roles which never worked. The only double leg player was Jamiu Collins but whenever he misses the  ball, Omeruo will be struggling because he is only good at the right.”

Disu said he wants the Super Eagles to go back to his days when they had  such natural left wingers like Adokie Amiesimaka, Humphrey Edebor, Felix Owolabi and Emmanuel Amuneke amongst others  which made the national team a force to be reckoned with not only in the continent but globally.

“What I’m saying is that we must go back to the era when we had some great left wingers like Adokie Amiesimaka, Humphrey Edebor, , Felix Owolabi , Emmanuel Amuneke and others too numerous to mention which made the Super Eagles thick. It’s only by having such players that our game will be entertaining and produce better results,” he stressed.

The Coach who is presently the Executive Secretary of Lagos Junior League, while giving pass mark to the Franco- German handler of the team Gernot Rohr for discovering new players, stated that his efforts will not be complete until he gets good left wingers in the team and also mandate his assistant, Aloy Agu to shop for quality goalkeepers because that department of the team is weak.
