Lauretta Onochie: Nigerians dig up evidence of partisanship

As calls for the Senate to reject the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner grows, Nigerians have dug up evidence to show that she has been partisan as recently as 2020.

Onochie, who was nominated by President Muhammadu as South-south Commissioner for the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), has maintained that she quit partisan politics since 2019 after Buhari was re-elected.

Onochie was Buhari’s head of Social Media and was always at daggers drawn with Nigerians as constantly churned disinformation in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and her principal, Buhari.

But Nigerians, who vehemently oppose her nomination, have proven that Onochie tweeted about APC’s virtual NEC meeting in June last year. This counters Onochie’s claim that she has been involved in party politics since 2019.

“There’s DEFINITELY an APC e-NEC meeting TOMORROW. WE are going through a growth process. Thank you, everyone,” she

had tweeted.

Seriake Dickson, former Bayelsa State governor, asked Onochie to defend her position as a non-partisan member of the APC, saying her nomination cast doubts on her ability to be impartial as INEC Commissioner.

@FirstLadyship said; “1. Sen Opeyemi Bamidele admitted Prof Yakubu worked for President Buhari in various capacities before his appointment as INEC Boss.

So what happened at Lauretta Onochie’s senate screening as INEC National Commissioner, is a shameless display of Quid Pro Quo for “First Friends.

“2. Even if Madam Lauretta Onochie could not respect her old age when she lied shamelessly & perjured herself, how about those senators who are insisting she must be cleared? No shame at all?

Lauretta is very much an active member of the ruling APC, & a staunch Buhari supporter,” she said.

Aside from her tweets, Nigerians also showed evidence of her membership of APC in her home state of Delta.

Membership forms, including party cards, were part paraphernalia of Onochie.

Demola Olarenwaju said: “There are more discreet APC members nationwide that Buhari can plant in INEC to do his dirty rigging duties.

Nominating someone as openly partisan as Lauretta Onochie is a direct “Nothing You Can Do About It” move and an attempt to totally destroy yet another institution.”

@UnekuE said: “With her lies, Lauretta Onochie, a die in the wool APC member, whose name appears as no. 2 on the ward 4 registers of the APC in Aniocha LGA of Delta state, has further demonstrated her lack of integrity 2 be trusted with the position of a commissioner in INEC.”

Activist and human rights campaigner, Deji Adeyanju, said if Senate goes ahead to approve her nomination, anything coming out from the electoral body will be anything but credible.

“Lauretta Onochie will not only dent the image of INEC, but she will also make anything coming out of the commission not credible,” he said.

@FS_Yusuf_ said: Lauretta Anochie is very partisan, and as a matter of fact, an active and juggernaut member of the APC Party. Considering her for an INEC commissioner is against the very institutional values the INEC stands for. We can’t sit and watch Buhari destroy our fledgling democracy,” he said.

“If the National Assembly allows someone like Lauretta Onochie to become an INEC Commissioner they should just merge with the Executive properly so we know we have only two arms of government in Nigeria,” Dipo Awojide said.
