Land dispute: Two communities deserted in Benue

By Godwin Akor, Makurdi

As this year’s cropping season approaches, Mbachaku and Mbachoho communities in Mbanato kindred in Utte district of Vandeikya local government area of Benue state have been deserted as a result of land dispute.

Residents of the two communities who have been living together earlier in the week razed down houses on both sides following the clearing of land with the expectation that another rain would fall to usher in the new cropping season.

Eyewitness told Nigerian Xpress that women, children and the elderly started running for their dear lives as soon as the youths began to put houses on fire previous.

It was gathered that only a handful of the strong and the courageous were seen in the two communities who have been living together without problems.

Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr Titus Uba, who is from Vandeikya local government, earlier in the week, appealed to the warring communities to embrace peace so that nagging  issues would be resolved amicably by the state government.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Serwuese Anene, confirmed the incident, saying some police men have been sent to the disputed area to restore peace.

She said no life has been lost while those that left for fear of attacks have been told to return home.

She appealed to the warring communities to lay down their arms, assuring that enough armed police men have been moved to the troubled area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Recently, Governor Samuel Ortom appealed to people of the state to tolerate one another over the issue of land as the new cropping season approaches.
