Lagos Police to probe officers accused of extortion

The Lagos State Police Command has promised to investigate an allegation of extortion levelled against some men of the command.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday, noted that the police had zero tolerance for corruption, reports The Punch.

Ajisebutu was reacting to a video showing a popular comedian, Debo Adebayo, aka Mr Macaroni, accusing some policemen of collecting money from a resident.

Debo was said to be driving when he reportedly observed the victim lamenting that the police collected N30,000 from him.

In a bid to rescue the victim, the comedian stopped, disembarked from his vehicle and engaged the cops in a shouting match.

He instructed a man at the scene to capture the face of the cop alleged to have collected the money.

The policemen were reported to be attached to the Ogudu Police Division.

Debo, in the video, could be heard saying that the policemen should return the money, as the victim showed him what appeared to be evidence of the transfer payment.

The police spokesman, Ajisebutu, said the police would look into the case.

He said, “We do not condone any unprofessional act. The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has zero–tolerance for corruption. We will investigate the matter and act appropriately.”
