Lagos averts inter-state fire

…As LASEMA recovers distressed oil spilling tanker in Ogun

Alagbole, a border town in Akute-Ajuwon Local Council Development Area, LCDA (old Ifo LG), domiciled within Ogun State boundaries, and its Lagos counterpart, was effectively rescued from an imminent fire disaster when LASEMA Response Team recovered a fallen oil tanker spilling it’s contents, in an overnight operation.

The Lagos–Ogun, Cross-Border operation, supervised by LASEMA’s Director of Operations, Engr. Adebayo Olatunde Akinsanya, followed distress calls to the Lagos 767/112 Emergency Toll Free numbers yesterday night on a fallen oil tanker loaded to capacity, spilling Premium Motor Spirit, PMS (Petrol) at Alagbole where it was involved in a lone accident.

The distressed oil tanker with registration number EPE 908 XA, owned by NNPC, was loaded to it’s 45,000 litres capacity with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS (Petrol) which started leaking profusely when it’s rear end (the Tank) bearing it’s contents (Petrol) detached from its head (the Driver’s Cabin), and impacted on the road due to mechanical failure  while trying to ascend a hill along the Alagbole corridor about 10:05p.m.

The interstate recovery operation which was Coordinated by LASEMA’s Director of Operations, commenced at about 10:45p.m, with Blanketing of the entire affected area and rear end of the oil tanker immediately the LASEMA Response Team and Lagos State Fire Service, which was later joined by the Ogun State Fire Service Men arrived, in order to douse volatility of the Premium Motor Spirit which was being conveyed by the fallen oil tanker.

During the operation which recorded no deaths or injuries, the Truck head (Driver’s Cabin) was safely recovered to a lay by about 01:00hours, with trans-loading of fuel that commenced about 03:15hours, being completed at about 04:20hours, which saw the fallen Tanker finally recovered at about 04:50hours with the deployed LASEMA heavy Duty Equipment (Super Metro) which terminated the operation at the wee hours this morning.

Preliminary Report on the Overturned NNPC Truck at Alagbole, Ogun State emanating from Office of the DG/CEO LASEMA signed by Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, on the six hour interstate operation has it that, “On arrival at the incident scene, it was discovered  that a tanker with registration number EPE 908 XA belonging to NNPC fully loaded with Forty Five Thousand (45,000) litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell off the road and rolled back when trying to ascend a hill along the corridor.

“This resulted in the contents spilling off around the neighborhood and its environs posing a serious threat to lives and property in the vicinity.

“The Lagos and Ogun State Fire Services, Nigerian Police and LASEMA Response Team are all responders at the scene with LASEMA heavy duty equipment working to secure the vehicle and the entire incident scene.

“No injuries nor mortalities were recorded at the scene”.

In a similar incident at an ongoing operation, LASEMA is recovering a truck with unknown registration number conveying a 20feet container that suddenly lost control while on motion and fell sideways as a result of careless driving, leading to a partial traffic obstruction.

Situation report regarding a truck accident at Anthony Oke outward Oshodi has it that “Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was discovered that a truck conveying 20ft container with unknown registration number suddenly lost control while on motion and fell sideways as a result of over speeding and reckless driving, thereby partially obstructing vehicular activities along the axis.

“There was no loss of life. However, the driver’s motor boy sustained minor injuries which has  been taken care of”.
