Anthony Iwuoma

The Federal Government on Thursday said it was yet to arrive at conclusions to explain the cause of strange deaths in the North-west state of Kano.

Dr. Osagie Ehanire, the Minister for Health,  announced this at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja, saying the matter was still being investigated.

About 150 persons had reportedly died in Kano of late, fuelling fears that the deaths could be COVID-19 related, which prompted the government to order investigations.

However, the minister said it was not only Kano State that recorded such strange deaths, pointing out that eight states were involved but promised that  the Ministry of Health would continue to investigate them.

Ehanire revealed that Nigeria had learnt a lot through ongoing interactions with Chinese personnel, based on their own experiences in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

The minister urged those claiming to have cure for the COVID-19 pandemic to continue with their researches on them and also advised them to approach the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

He said: “Nobody needs to give you permission to approach NAFDAC.”
