Int’l Women’s Day: Menfolk urged to protect reproductive right of women

The active involvement and commitment of menfolk towards the protection of women’s reproductive right has been described as vital step in achieving healthier wellbeing of the family and entire society at large.   

  This formed part of the message in a release by the Secretary of a Non-Governmental advocacy working group, Family Health Initiative Ogun (FAHIO), Revd. Olajide Odugbemi in Abeokuta, commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day with the theme, ’’I am Generation Equality:  Realizing Women’s Right’’.

  Odugbemi who emphasized on the roles of men and fathers in ensuring home stability, stated that their support for women during childbearing period in embracing modern family planning or childbirth spacing method would guarantee improved quality and safety of life for father, mother and children with multiplying effect on the economic growth of the country.       The Cleric noted that women deserved the right to live good life devoid of complications, agony and deaths in the process of childbirth, adding that sincere interest and genuine investment by stakeholders in family planning programming would increase uptake of family planning contraceptives and access to effective services to further reduce maternal mortality rate in the country. 

   ‘’Men and fathers have crucial roles to play in ensuring that reproductive health of women are protected by encouraging them in adopting family planning or childbirth spacing methods that best suit them during the childbirth period, at improving the quality of life of the family and help achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for economic growth of the country’’, he said.   

  Odugbemi called on women organizations to intensity efforts on awareness creation towards the importance of embracing modern family planning which has been proven to be effective and safe, adding that such campaign would avail couples the opportunity to have number of children they could cater for.
