INSECURITY: Ogun Govt. parleys with police

The Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran says the state government will parley with leadership of the state police command, as part of the efforts to strengthen the security network and ensure hitch-free of inauguration of Amotekun security outfit in the state after passing into law.

Adeniran made this known at a courtesy call to the office of the Ogun state Police Commissioner of Police, Eleweeran, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

 He said that Amotekun was established to provide security for residents of the state against hooliganism, kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism, noting that it was instituted to counter or compete with Federal Government’s apparatus in the country.

He assured the police of state government commitment to strengthen and improve on the security of lives and property of the entire country through the formation of Amotekun outfit.

“Indeed, it is obvious that formation of Amotekun was not to compete or flex muscles with  in the police, State Security Services (SSS), Civil Defence  and other security outfit but to complement the efforts of the existing government’s securities in the country”, Adeniran said.

He said that government needs the support of the police especially in the area of sensitive operations, which has to do with interpretation of laws and area of Administration of Criminal Justice Law (2017), monitoring to ensure the implementation of the law, which would be Co-chaired by  the Chief Judge and State Attorney-General.

He added that the law could not be viable and completed without the representatives of police, noting that police has potential in the implementation of Law, as they were the law enforcement agents in the country.

Adeniran said the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, Review of Land Grabbing Laws, Sexual Harassment Laws Laws on Kidnapping and others need to do with police for a more effective and efficient approach.

He also assured the police command leadership of establishment of forensic centre at the Police Headquarter to complement their work, for thorough investigative purposes, and to reduce business of cyber crime in the state.

“Though, I really appreciate the state police command for the meritorious work in fighting crimes in the state, kidnapping has reduced in the state, armed robbery, land grabbing and other social vices has also reduced, but they really need state government attention too, to complement their work”, Adeniran added.

In his submission, the Ogun State Police Commissioner, CP. Kenneth Ebrimson, said security was everybody business, noting that it was not the monopoly of Police to secure lives and property but to collectively tackle the menace of insecurity in the state.

He added that the essence of security operatives was to ensure the safety of lives and property as part of the responsibilities of police to achieve the state and federal government’s accomplishments missions and mandates.

He added that Amotekun issues was blown out of proportion and good intentions of the initiators, as some tagged it from a regional connectivity, and southwestern security outfit to fight their enemies.

Ebrimson, said Amotekun was not different from what was already on the ground, likes of Vigilante Group, So Safe Corps and many others, which they have partnering with police to provide security to the entire state.

He said that a lot of awareness was needed to convince the notion of people in their misconception about the Amotekun, noting that he sees the Amotekun outfit to assist and complement the efforts of the police and other existing security apparatus in the country.

He said the greatest challenges before the police now was Cultism, which the police needed to deployed 90percent of their arsenal to combat, especially in the Sagamu area of the state, saying that it was a mother of kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and land grabbing.

Those at the parlay meetings including; Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Wale Abass, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Administration, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, Assistant Commissioner of Police in Charge of Operations, Mr. Muyideen Obe, Mr. Segun Olaitan, Director of Public Prosecutions in the Ogun Ministry Of Justice and Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters, Miss. Adejoke Are.
