Implement 35% Affirmative Action, Nigerian women urge Buhari

As President Muhammadu Buhari begins to put his cabinet together make appointments across parastatals and agencies, a coalition of Women groups and Civil Society Organisations have reminded him of his promise to implement the thirty – five percent Affirmative Action raised during a meeting with the female parliamentarians at the Advocacy Summit in August last year.

A statement signed by thirty- five representatives of the different groups notes that the number of women in governance is as low as four percent.

According to the statement, President Buhari assured the gathering of full support saying that appointing them will improve the representation of women in politics.

He described Nigerian women as resilient and dedicated to their responsibilities and therefore promised to provide  the enabling environment for women to participate in political process as women constitute more than fifty percent of voters.

He said that women are dedicated and more principled and expressed confidence that women would make great leaders.

The group believe that President Buhari would be remembered for restoring true democracy while achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on women empowerment in  the country if he made good on his promise.
