IGP Adamu orders CP Odumosu to investigate, punish officers vandalising shops in Lagos

Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has directed Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Olusegun Odumosu, to commence immediate investigation into vandalism of shops displayed by some police officers, which has been trending online since Thursday.

The police chief also urged his commissioner in Lagos State to commence disciplinary actions against the officers involved in the crime.

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered, early this week, that all open markets and stores, except for sellers of food, medicines, medical equipment and other essential life-saving products, be closed for seven days over the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, the state government had been forced afterwards to clarify that it doesn’t mean the state is on lockdown as erroneously believed in public.

“Mr. Governor, who is the Incident Commander, only urged private sector establishments to introduce measures that will support the government’s efforts at curtailing the spread of COVID-19,” an official statement read.

However, IGP Adamu condemned the officers’ ‘unprofessionalism and highhandedness’.

A statement from his office said, “The IGP notes that we are now in extra-ordinary times – a global state of emergency. Police officers involved in the enforcement of restriction orders and other law enforcement functions must therefore exercise their discretionary powers with utmost sense of professionalism, compassion and respect for the citizens.”
