President Muhammadu Buhari’s new Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, has said the president needed his loyalty, competence and support to succeed, while making it clear that he reports to the President directly and not to the nation.

The appointment of Prof. Gambari, who succeeded the late Abba Kyari, as Chief of Staff to President Buhari, was confirmed at Wednesday’s virtual Federal Executive Council meeting presided by the president.

At the end of the meeting, the retired top diplomat bared his mind to newsmen on what is expected of him in his new office.

“I want to thank the president of the federal republic for giving me this opportunity to serve him and of the country,” he said.

Responding to a question as regards what Nigerians should expect from him, Prof. Gambari said, “I have not started, so I will find out and maybe… I don’t report directly to the nation; I report directly to the president.”

Prof. Gambari also spoke on what the president needed from him, saying: “I think he needs my loyalty, competence and support…  I will serve the president to the best of my ability.”
