I quit my marriage because I didn’t want to die – Onyeka Onwenu

Veteran songstress, Onyeka Onwenu, has said she could have died if she hadn’t quit her marriage.

The elegant stallion, as Onwenu is fondly called, told media personality, Kikilomo Atanda-Owo, in an interview that she would have loved her marriage to succeed but had no other option but to quit because it would have killed her.

The veteran singer and actress, who married a mystery Yoruba Muslim in 1984 with whom she had two children, described the marriage as a difficult, which was unsuitable for her and her children.

“I went through my marriage; it was difficult because I really did not want my marriage to end but I could not take it anymore. It would have killed me,” she said.

“I always say this and that is the truth. It was not good for the children to live in that kind of environment where the mother is depressed, the mother is carrying the weight of the whole family.”

Onwenu has for decades regaled Nigerians with her hit songs among which is the evergreen ‘one love keep us’ together. She recently joined the septuagenarian club.
