Hijrah: Osun Govt., bank workers observe public holiday

Osun Government offices and banks did not open for business activities on Friday, as workers joined Muslims to celebrate the Islamic New year ‘Hijrah 1441 AH’.

A check by the the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that activities in banks, state and local government secretariats in Osogbo were suspended, as no workers of the establishments were seen in their offices.

NAN recalls that this development followed the declaration of a public holiday for Friday by the state government to mark the beginning  of the Islamic new year.

However, observation further revealed that security officials were the only category of workers, who came to man their duty posts, obviously for security reasons.

As the banks were shut, so were the offices at the Olorunda and Osogbo Local Government Secretariats, including the state secretariat at Abere.

However, federal government establishments were open for business, since the federal workers were not affected by the state public holiday, just as markets in the state and other private businesses equally carried out their business activities.

NAN recalls that a statement signed by Mr Adebisi Obawale, the Supervisor of Osun Ministry of Home Affairs, had in addition to the public holiday, earlier declared by government, wished all Muslims a happy New Year.

The statement enjoined residents of the state to continue to live together harmoniously and peacefully with religious tolerance and understanding.

The government enjoined all Muslims to use the occasion to pray for the progress of the state economic prosperity, stability, peace, and continuation of good governance.

The statement advised them to also use the new Islamic Year for their spiritual development. (NAN)
