Gunmen kill ex-Bayelsa CNPP chair, Oputu

Mr. Frank-Oputu, a former state chairman of the the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), was reportedly gunned down by suspeced gun men.

The incident which occurred Tuesday night breaking Wednesday took place at  his residence along Baybridge road   in yenagoa
Oputu, until his demise was an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC)in the state and belonged to the Senator Heineken Lokpobiri led faction of the party.
However what led to his gruesome death is yet to be known as at the time of this report but as an outspoken Politician and a member of the opposition APC, sources disclosed that Oputu has several political litigatiions and the latest was his opposition to the emergence of the state exco  of another faction which he consistently opposed and described as illegal and unconstitutional.
Besides , he’s reportedly been a strong advocate against the existence of atisanal refinaries being put in place by some ex-militants around his country home Egbematoru axis of Southern Local Government Area of the state.
Community sources disclosed  that he, in conjunction  with some Community leaders in the area recently petitioned the Military and DSS on those behind the activities of illegal refinaries in the area.
Contacted on the development, Asimimi Bustwat, a  Superintendent of Police, who is the image maker of the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying investigations are on top gear for details about the act.
A  statement from Butswat, read this : “on 26 April 2022, at about 23:00 hours, gunmen scaled the fence and gained access to the residence of Hon. Frank Oputu located at No. 1 Jonah Road Bay-Bridge, Kpansia, fired several shots at the Honourable through the window of his bedroom and fatally injured him.
“The injured victim was rushed to Federal Medical Center, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.”
The statement also noted that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ben Nebolisa Okolo fdc, charged officers to intensify efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators and reassured members of the public of the Command’s resolve at ensuring the culprits are arrested and brought to book.
The Police boss also urged members of the public to remain calm as investigation is ongoing.
Morris. Alagoa, an environmental activist who condemed the incident in an interview urged police to get to the root of the matter .
Alagoa who is the Project Officer/Head of Niger Delta Resource Centre at Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA), added  “I condemn the killing of our Ijaw brother (Frank Oputu), a Bayelsan who would have loved to live like any other. The police Should carry out thorough investigation”
