Group petitions Delta State CP over alleged robbery, torture and abduction by cops

Daniel Anokwuru

Non-Governmental Organisation ( NGO), Behind Bars Rights Foundation, has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP, Adeleke Adeyinka, over alleged robbery, torture and abduction of two citizens, Engineer Adigwe Christopher and Ayinor Felix, along Infant Jesus Road, Saba, Delta State.

They group alleged that the officers drove the victims to Onicha Ugbo, along Benin Asaba Expressway, where they were allegedly robbed of their valuables and dropped like victims of “One Chance Robbery”.

The petition dated November 12, 2019, was received by the office of the CP on the same date. It called on the CP to assemble the officers on duty at the scene on the fateful day for possible identification by the victims.

“We write on behalf of Christopher Adigwe and Ayinor Felix. On Sunday, November 10, 2019, at about 10:30am, Adigwe and Felix were walking along Redeem Street, Infant Jesus road, Asaba, wherein they were accosted by patrol officers. Upon their interception, they were subjected to fear of imminent battery, torture and detention without any cogent or compelling reasons. They requested for their phones which were tendered and searched and nothing incriminating was found. Sadly, they further threatened to open fire on them. They dragged them into their vehicle and drove them away. On getting to Ubulu-Okiti along Asaba-Benin Expressway, they drove into a lonely bush, fired a shot in the air and threatened to kill them. They accused them of kidnapping. Their properties were seized from them.”

The petition added that the victims were pushed out of the vehicle at different locations like victims of ‘one chance’ robbery.

“They have restated that they can identify the said officers and the patrol vehicle if an instruction is issued to that effect. It is in furtherance to the foregoing that we are calling on your good office to wade into the matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” the petition requested. When contacted through her cell phone number, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, told the reporter that she was in Abuja for a seminar. She said she got to know about the incident through someone but did not have full details about the matter yet until she returns to Delta.
