Group petitions Buhari, raises the alarm over APC Direct Primary in Edo

Onazena Abbey, Benin-City

A group, under the platform of Edo Unity League has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to reconsider the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee’s stand to conduct direct governorship primaries in Edo State come June 22.

National facilitator of the group, Comrade Aiyamenkhue Edolpolor, also a chieftain of the party, said adopting direct primary amidst the escalating figures of Coronavirus victims in the state would only breed further fatalities.

He said apart from the health implications and social security of the delegates to such primaries, mobilsing the over 350, 000 APC members across the 172 wards,  coupled with the level of rural illiteracy, would amount to naught if allowed to go ahead.

According to him, “lt is appropriate to respectfully sensitise the NWC and NEC of the APC that direct primaries proposal is antithetical to all known protocols of security and health safety in this unfortunate era of COVID-19 period.”

The group, which noted that Governor Godwin Obaseki has the advantage to secure landmark victory in the direct primaries, called on the governor to factor the health safety interest of Edo people into the decision.

In a related development, the 18 APC chairmen in the local government areas of the state have declared null and void the said waiver granted to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu by the party’s National Working Committee to contest the governorship primary.

“The truth is that Pastor Ize-Iyamu recently joined Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) which is a group organised by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to destabalise APC in Edo State,” the group chairmen said.
