Gov. Sanwo-Olu launches 1,000 LAGOSRIDE taxis

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Wednesday launched 1000 units of taxis tagged LAGOSRIDE as part of moves to address transportation challenges in the state.

The scheme was the Phase One of the taxi schemes planned by the government.

Speaking at the event held at Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor said the scheme was in fulfillment of his promises to Lagosians.

He added the scheme was the last stage of the multi-modal transport system plan of his administration which included improved waterways transport system, the ongoing construction of the Red and Blue rail line and the Bus Rapid Transport, BRT, which are already in operation.

“The last of our modern transport system is the taxi scheme. Lagos is moving from the era of rickety taxis to brand new, safe and secure transportation vehicles.,”he said.

As a way of ensuring security of passengers and drivers of the taxis, the governor said they are fitted with dashboard cameras connected to the control centre, and a panic button on the dashboard which can be pressed by the driver or passenger incase of any danger.

The panic button, when pressed, immediately alerts the control.centre of danger.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the cost of the taxis have been subsidized by the government for would-be drivers who will become full owners of the taxis after they finish paying over a period of time.

Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Fredrick Oladeinde, said over 1, 786 applications were received by the government from interested drivers, adding the administration is resolute to revive the transportation system in Lagos State.

Oladeinde said Lagosians could.book a ride on the taxis by downloading LAGOSRIDE apps. on Google Play Store.
