Gombe Commissioner assures NUJ of completion of press centre

Gombe State Government has promised to complete the abandoned Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, before the beginning of the second quarter of 2020.

Alhaji Alhassan Ibrahim, Gombe Commissioner for Information, made the promise on Friday in Gombe, after he was taken round the building by the Gombe State Chairman of the NUJ, Mr. Saidu Bappa Malala.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project started over seven years ago but it’s only 70 per cent had been completed.

According to the commissioner, who was told that only N7.5m was needed to put the press centre to use, said work would resume as soon as he goes through the project details and effect any review necessary.

He promised to facilitate the release of the remaining funds so that work would commence in earnest with a target of completing it before April.

The commissioner said the current administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya would not relent in providing a conducive atmosphere for journalists to practice, adding that government will not accept or condone sub-standard work on the press centre.

“I can assure you, we’re not going to take over sub-standard edifice, the furniture and what they have provided are sub-standard and we’re not going to accept them,” he said.

Alhaji Manu Kwamanda, Chief Executive Officer of the firm handling the contract, FAWA Ventures, told the commissioner that funding and rising prices of building materials affected timely completion of the project.

Kwamanda assured that as soon as funds are made available, he would move to site and would abide by the contract’s specification and standards.

Malala, however, expressed optimism that the current administration in Gombe State would fulfill its promise of completing the project going by the commitment put in by the Information Commissioner.(NAN)
