FRSC seeks collaboration with parents, guardians on children’s safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday advised parents/guardians to work collaboratively with it to ensure the safety of children on the road.

Edo Sector Commander of the corps, Mr Anthony Oko, said in Benin at an event organised in commemoration of 2019 Children’s Day, that the collaboration had become imperative.

Oko said that although the theme for this year’s Children’s Day celebration was, `End Malnutrition, Protect the Future of the Nigerian Children’, FRSC decided to adopt a different theme, `Protect the Future of the Nigerian Child, Safe Ride for Children’ in order to underscore the exigency of the safety of children on the road.

The sector commander explained that at the review of the report on road traffic crashes at the end of the 2018/2019 Operation Zero Tolerance, FRSC had observed that the rate of children’s involvement in road accidents was on the increase.

“The corps, therefore, decided to carry out strong campaign that will communicate the urgent need to ensure the protection of children on the road.

“Some of the measures to be adopted to ensure the success of the campaign is strict enforcement of children staying at the back seat of vehicles and the use of seat belts.

“Another measure is to ensure that school buses are painted yellow so as to make other road users to be able to identify school buses from other vehicles on the road,’’ he said.

He added that as part of the Children’s Day celebration by the corps in the zone, students from two schools selected from each of the three states comprising the zone would participate in a quiz competition in Anambra.

He said that the winner of the competition would be presented with a trophy and cash prize.

Parents should not allow their children to go out alone until they are old enough to know the Green Cross Code and use it properly. The age is different for all children, but it is generally not before they are eight years old.

To follow the code, children must find a safe place to cross, stand on the pavement near the kerb, and look all round for traffic and listen and if traffic is coming – let it pass then look all round again.

They should also walk straight across the road when there is no traffic near, and keep looking and listening for traffic while crossing. (NAN)
