Twenty-eight years old father of three, Ishola Ilaya, has committed suicide in his residence situated at 27, Sariki Street, Casidy, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The Nigerian Xpress gathered that the incident occurred on  Sunday, June 2, 2019. The deceased, it was learnt, had finished eating his food very early in the morning on the fateful day, in preparation for the day’s fasting, when he entered inside his two rooms apartment and took his life.

It was also learnt that the deceased’s mother was the first to discover the incident and quickly raised alarm. The victim was rescued from the rope he tied to the ceiling fan, but he eventually died on his way to the hospital.

A neighbour, George Chikezie, told our reporter that the deceased was living very fine. He said he was a carpenter, and also had two motorcycles working for him. He posited that the entire community was astonished when they learnt about the sad development.

“It happened on Sunday, June 2, 2019. That was during the Muslim fasting. He was a Muslim; people knew him in the area as Maja, but his real name is Ishola Ilaya.  He had finished eating his food that early morning, to prepare for his fasting and entered his apartment. His wife and three children were outside. When his mother came to check on him, because she lives in the same building with him, his wife told her that he was inside. The building belongs to them.

His mother shouted his name but he did not answer. When she opened the door, she saw him hanging on a rope he had tied to the ceiling fan in their sitting room. The woman raised alarm. People came to rescue him, but he died on their way to the hospital. We do not know what prompted him to take such decision. He was living very fine with his family. He was a carpenter and also had two motorcycles working for him.”

Another resident, Alfa Tiamu, an Okada rider, reported that the deceased was from a polygamous home. He noted that he was the only son of his mother, a very quiet and hard working person.

“Maja use to work with us here sometimes. He had two motorcycles; he was a very quiet and hard working person. Everyone in this community knew him. We believed his death was spiritual attack because he was living very well with his family. His father married many wives; he was the only son of his mother. Even though he was a Muslim, he associated with Christians more. His death was very strange because he worked with us two days before the sad incident.”

Step brother of the deceased, also an Okada rider at Casidy bus stop, who preferred not to be named, said the deceased never showed any sign of depression, stressing that he was observing his fasting and closing prayer with others, without any sadness in his face.

“My brother never showed any sign of depression. He was playing with everyone as usual, observing his fasting diligently. He was not lacking anything; his carpentry work was fetching him enough money. He has three children, the day he died, he had finished eating very early in the morning in preparation for the day’s fasting. His wife and children were outside but he went inside and hanged himself.”

When the reporter visited the deceased’s residence, he saw his mother sleeping on a wooden chair inside the compound. She told the reporter that she was the first that discovered  the incident and raised alarm. She maintained that her late son was doing very fine, and had no reason to take his own life.

According to her: “My son was a carpenter. He was doing very fine with his wife and three children. I don’t know the reason he killed himself. His wife is inside sleeping. That morning, I came to greet him. I was told he was inside but when I called his name many times as usual, he did not answer. I opened the door and saw him hanging on a rope, I screamed and people came to rescue him, but he died on our way to the hospital.”
