Facebook to change name as part of company rebrand

Social media giant, Facebook is planning a name change as part of a rebranding effort, as per a report by The Verge which cited a source at the company.

The report says Mark Zuckerberg, the Chief Executive Officer, will   announce the name change at the annual Connect Conference on October 28, The Verge report said.

If confirmed, Facebook will tow a similar line to that of Google which has Alphabet as the parent company.

The rebranding will position the social media company with many other apps under the parent company.

Facebook has not confirmed the report. An official at the company said he does not comment on speculation or rumour.

Facebook has faced significant pressure following revelations from whistleblower, France Haugen, who told US Congress the company had put “astronomical profits before people” and that it harms children and is destabilising democracies. Haugen has been behind the leak of a number of documents to the Wall Street Journal, including internal research revealing 30% of teenage girls felt Instagram made dissatisfaction with their body worse.
