Ex-Speaker House of Reps dies

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chaka Akaai Benjamin, has passed away.

Benjamin died in his hometown, Zaki-Biam in Benue State on March 9, aged 81.

The former speaker served less than three months in office from October to 31st December 1983 during President Shehu Shagari’s short-lived second term.

The civilian administration was terminated via a military coup, which saw the Gen. Muhammadu Buhari emerge as head of state. Nigeria remained under the military rule until the return to democracy in 1999.

The deceased ex-lawmaker was born on August 13, 1940. He was an educationist and school administrator before becoming a member of the House of Representatives in 1979.

Between 1979 and 1983, Benjamin was the House Committee Chairman on Police Affairs.

He contested and returned to the House in October 1983 and was elected Speaker on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
