Elite Scandals: Chrisland: The many scandals of elite schools in Nigeria

The recent scandal, involving students of Chrisland school in Lagos has not only thrown up the issue of poor parenting but also the rot the s0-called elite schools in Nigeria.

For those who may not be aware, a rehash of what transpired in one of the most highly prized schools in Lagos will do.

According to stories, making the rounds both on social and conventional media, Chrisland schools in Victoria Garden City in the plush area of Lagos had taken their students on a trip to do Dubai.

The students, who are barely in their teens, got raunchy and filmed themselves having sex. One of the girls was alleged to be a 10-year-old girl, who left a second floor where she was lodged with other pupils to the 11th floor to meet three boys for a supposed truth or dare game.

The video circulating on social media throws up what many say happens in the so-called schools where students in these institutions are either completely cut off from reality or engage in immoral acts that leave many flabbergasted.

The school was shut down but recently reopened on the orders of the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

However, the Lagos State Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, explained that the reopening of the school was to ensure that other students were not denied access to learning while an investigation into the issue continued.

In a statement she signed, the commissioner said the school’s Parent Teachers’ Association would be working on scheduled psychosocial support for the students involved in the immoral act.

The statement read, “The Lagos State Ministry of Education has directed that all Chrisland Schools shut for alleged misconduct of some students in Dubai be reopened from Monday, April 25, 2022.

“The directive follows a review of the ongoing administrative investigation into the incident. Besides, it is to ensure that students are not denied access to learning when the new term begins on Monday, April 25 2022.

“The State Government shut the schools for the safety of students and the staff and to ensure unhindered investigation of the incident.

“The Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies of the State, in conjunction with the school’s Parent Teachers Association, will be working on scheduled psychosocial support for the students.

“An extensive assessment of the school’s procedure, especially on external trips and excursions, is being made to identify safety gaps and prevent such incidents.”

The ministry disclosed that it would commence a review of guidelines/protocols, governing private and public schools across the state within the next month.

Before Chrisland, there was Premier Academy in Abuja

A 14-year-old pupil of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, died of an infection after a condom was found in her private parts.

The SS1 pupil, Karen-Happuch Akpagher, was believed to have been sexually abused before she was withdrawn from school by her mother, Mrs. Vihimga Akpagher, on June 19, 2021, for treatment. Karen, however, died two days later at a hospital in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja.

Speaking with journalists, Mrs. Akpagher said she had received a frantic call from her daughter a few days before her death, asking her to come to withdraw her from the school because she was not feeling well.

She said although the school was unwilling to release the pupil and even argued that there was no need to fret, her daughter remained adamant and even cried that she wanted to go home.

“When I called the principal, he said my daughter would need to be isolated for five days (upon return). I felt let me go home since the school said they could take care of her. On my way home, my daughter called back through the school phone and asked where I was. I told her I came but turned back and she started crying.

“So, I got angry and asked her why she is stressing me since she would be returning home soon for holidays. So, she asked to speak with her uncle. She said, ‘you people don’t know why I am asking you to come to pick me and you are leaving,” Mrs Akpagher said.

The Punch reports that Mrs. Akpagher stated that while she was still contemplating whether to return to the school, she was informed by the housemother that Karen could hardly walk the day before and had been crying. The housemother advised that the young girl be taken to a hospital for a proper check-up.

Then Deeper Life Pupil was sexually molested by schoolmates

A woman alleged that her 11-year-old son was been sexually molested by fellow students in a college in Akwa Ibom State, South-south Nigeria.

The woman, Deborah Okezie, posted a video on Facebook where she said some senior students in the college, Deeper Life High School, Uyo, “habitually inserted their fingers and toes in his son’s anus.”

She said her son was frequently starved and beaten up by the senior students.

The victim was moved by the school principal from a hostel where other junior students stayed to another hotel filled with senior students because he was bedwetting, Mrs. Okezie said in the clip, which has gone viral on Facebook.

The victim looked terrified in the video. The mother prodded him to speak up about his ordeal.

“They said if he complained, he would be a dead man,” Mrs. Okezie said. “Please, help me share this (video) until it gets to the appropriate authorities.”

“They will remove his boxer and push their legs and hands into his anus,” the woman said.

The boy said the senior students threatened to kill him if he reported the matter to the school principal.

In another clip, the boy, wearing his school uniform, was seen throwing up inside a car when he was being taken away from the school by his mother.

Mrs. Okezie said she decided to visit the school “when she dreamt about her son and felt that all is not well”.

“I had a dream, I saw my son waving me goodbye. I told my husband I have to go to school, that this dream is not right, he said let’s pray. I said to him prayers are not enough, I have to go to the school and see what is happening,” she said.

Mrs. Okezie said she reported her son’s ordeal to the school principal, who assured her that the boy would be returned to the junior hostel.

“Look at a child I sent to school, he came back with a broken anus.

“People who have children in boarding school don’t know what these children go through; boarding school of these days is not like the boarding school of those days,” she said.
