Edo 2020: Delta on course to retain title, says Ogba

With the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival tagged, “ Edo 2020”, fast approaching, Chairman of Delta State Athletics Association, Chief Solomon Ogba, has expressed confidence that the state will retain its number one position in the Games.

Delta State at the last Sports Festival in Abuja in 2018, amassed an astonishing 183 gold medals, 88 silver and 101 bronze medals to emerge overall winners of the country’s version of the Olympics and Ogba believes they are on course to surpass the record.

He told our correspondent at the just concluded Access Bank Lagos City Marathon that the state is not leaving any stone unturned in its determination to continue to dominate the country’s sporting arena.

“You’re aware that Delta State is the leading sporting state in the country and we”re not in a hurry to give up our position,” began the former Delta State Commissioner For Youths and Sports.

“ As with tradition, we’ve started preparations in earnest and all logistics have been put in place to make our athletes and officials comfortable throughout the period of the Games and that’s why I am confident that we’re going to retain our position.”

Ogba, a former President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, while commending Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa for providing enabling environment for sports men and women of the state, noted that the excellent welfare package enjoyed by it’s athletes has helped in developing sports in the state.

“The strategy we adopted in moving sports forward in Delta State is simple methodology which involves providing world class facilities in all the senatorial zones of the state and putting in place good welfare package for athletes and coaches and I must commend Governor Okowa for empowering the youths through sports which has helped Delta State to continue its sports dominance,” he concluded.
