E-Governance: Nasarawa gov. flags off training for 150 directors

As part of the effort to revitalise the state’s civil service, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, on Wednesday, flagged off a two-day workshop for 150 directors drawn from ministries and parastatals in the state.

The two-day workshop with the theme, ‘The Role of Civil Servants in Sustainable Growth and Development of Nasarawa State’, was held at the Late Aliyu Akwe Doma Banquet Hall, in collaboration with GMASS Consulting and Solutions.

According to the governor, the training was expected to reinvigorate the civil service for improved service delivery, in line with the policy thrust of his administration to launch Nasarawa on the part of progress and socioeconomic development.

While noting that the civil service was the fulcrum in the formation and implementation of government policies and programmes, Governor Sule emphasised that the training session would afford the opportunity to study emerging challenges associated with current trends of doing government business.

The governor used the opportunity of the event to harp on the need for political appointees and permanent secretaries to imbibe the spirit of togetherness by making sure directors are giving the chance to perform their responsibilities.

“I am happy the commissioners and Permanent Secretaries are also here. The Directors cannot perform if the Commissioners and the Permanent Secretaries continue to take away the responsibilities of the Directors.

“I want to urge my colleagues, the Commissioners to allow the Perm Secs to do their jobs and the Perm Secs to allow the Directors to do their jobs,” the governor stated.

Governor Sule also warned that the purpose of the training, as well as the efforts of the directors, would not achieve the desired results if at the end of the training business continues as usual.

Speaking on the planned appointment of new permanent secretaries, the Governor further warned that only performance would be the benchmark for the appointment of a director as permanent secretary.

The governor charged participants at the training to participate actively in order to tap from the resource persons wealth of experience.

In a welcome remark, Head of Civil Service in the state, Abari Nicholas Aboki, commended the governor for keeping with his campaign promise to revive, reposition and sustain the development of the state civil service through capacity building.

Earlier, Convener of the workshop, Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, said given the significance of directors in achieving government aims, it has become imperative to engage them strategically.

Prof. Kida disclosed that the workshop which will brainstorm on topical issues concerning the roles of the director, would see nine papers presented by seasoned academics and administrators.
