DR Congo gets new prime minister, Sylvestre Ilukamba

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi has named Sylvestre Ilukamba as the new prime minister, his spokesman said in a statement on national television on Monday.

Ilukamba was previously the head of Congo’s national railway company, known as the SNCC.

He was also Finance minister under former President Mobutu Sese Seko.

Early, Bruno Tshibala, the current prime minister of DRC, officially submitted his resignation to President Tshisekedi Monday, asking him to allow the appointment of a new prime minister.

In February, Tshibala told reporters that he is about to resign during an interview.

DRC is Africa’s leading copper producer and the world’s top miner of cobalt, which is essential to electric car batteries, but it remains one of the world’s least developed countries largely due to poor governance and corruption. (NAN)
