As Nigerians debated the relevance of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme in the country today, Senator Shehu Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the last Assembly has kicked against scrapping the scheme.

Instead, Sani said the mandate of the scheme should be expanded to include military training for participants in order to combat insecurity in Nigeria.

“The NYSC should not be scrapped. It’s needed now more than ever before. Many Nigerians have never known anywhere other than their hometown and University town if not for NYSC. Its mandate should be expanded to give participants full military training in the face of insecurity,” Sani said on Twitter.

Nigerians debated on social media on Monday on the relevance of the scheme in the country as it reels from insecurity in almost all regions.

The country’s lower chamber, the House of Representatives, is considering a bill to scrap the scheme which has was introduced on May 1973 as an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war.

The bill has scaled second reading. If passed into law, it will see the almost 40-year-old scheme being dropped as a requisite for many things including job recruitments and political appointments

Members of the scheme have lately rejected postings to areas with high insecurity.
