In statement, the executive members implored Okowa to relax the lockdown as their daily earnings depend on it.

“We, the executive members of Ijaw Welders and Fitters in Delta state use this medium to appeal to our dear governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to look into the two weeks extension of the stay-at-home order given by His Excellency towards preventing the spread of the novel Coronavirus, a disease that originated from China but is ravaging the entire world, ” the statement read.

“Like majority of Nigerians all over the country, most of our members survive by means of daily job engagements. We are not so sure that the palliatives such as supply of foods being given out by the government will be sufficient enough to reach every Deltans, most especially those in the riverine communities, ” the Association said.

“We really want our able governor to look into this situation critically because those that do not have hope of taking care of their families can become sick through hunger and hypertension and can die faster than those infected by the coronavirus.

*We also want our amiable governor to know that a hungry man is an angry man. Many Deltans are truly frustrated due to the two weeks extension. In addition, the violent attitudes of security officials are not helping matters. It is on record that since the lockdown enforcement, government security officials have killed about 18 Nigerians than the COVID-19 pandemic which has killed roughly 12 persons as at Wednesday, April 15,” the statement read.
