COVID-19: Umahi orders payment of April salary to Ebonyi workers

…Vows to hold security chiefs responsible for breach of state restriction order

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has directed the immediate payment of April 2020 salary to civil/public servants in state, a step aimed at cushioning the effects of the prevailing Coronavirus ravaging the globe.

In a similar vein, the governor has threatened to hold security Chiefs in the state responsible for any breach of the restriction order/border closure with neighbouring states.

Addressing the people of the state in a live radio/television broadcast, on Tuesday, Governor Umahi said that worker deserved to be paid their next month salary on time to enable them reduce the hardship facing the citizenry.

Said he, “I have directed that Civil servants in the state be paid their April 2020 salary , this will enable them buy food stuffs for their families.

“The Coronavirus is a big lesson to the country, I have been emphasising the need for the country to diversify its economy into agriculture.”

The governor also harped on the need for the three tiers of government to diversify the economic base of the state and avoid the mono-economic economic challenges currently facing the country.

Governor Umahi also called on members of the National Assembly from the state to make donations to the state government to complement its efforts in cushioning the effects of the virus.

He commended corporate institutions notably the United Bank for Africa (UBA) for donating a whooping N1 billion to the 36 states in which Ebonyi State received N28.5million as its share of the fund.

Speaking against the payment of palliatives to the downtrodden and indigent members of the society, Govenor Umahi said that the state government was waiting for intervention from the federal authorities stressing that the moment it comes, the state government would commence the implementation.

He continued, “We are waiting for the Federal government intervention to states in form of palliatives, the moment we get such assistance, we would commence the payment of palliatives to the people.”
