COVID-19: Ogun govt. to enforce compulsory use of face mask May 1

…Violators to spend 14 days in Isolation Centres

The Ogun State Government says compulsory wearing of face mask in public places by residents of the state would become effective on May 1.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who made this known, last Friday, while briefing journalists on the activities of the state in combating the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, said the step became imperative to prevent community transmission of the deadly virus.

Governor Abiodun said the virus must be contained from spreading into various communities in the state, emphasising that residents must put on face mask or risk spending 14 days in Isolation Centres.

The governor, however, disclosed that about two million locally-made facemasks will soon be distributed among the vulnerable persons by his administration, insisting no person will be allowed to walk around in public places without putting on face masks.

His words, “We have always encouraged the use of face masks but let me add that with the reality facing us, the use of face masks in public by all individuals in Ogun State is now compulsory as from Friday, May 1, 2020.

“We will also begin to distribute face masks to those who cannot afford to buy, in addition to other materials to our vulnerable groups across the state”, he stated.

Governor Abiodun, who reiterated his administration’s commitment towards fighting the Covid-19 pandemic to a stand-still, noted that the number of affected persons in Ogun State rose to more than double.

According to him, as at last Thursday, there were 29 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the state as against 12 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as at Friday, April 17.

Out of the 29 cases, Governor Abiodun disclosed that six had been discharged to re-join their family and restart normal life; one died while 22 active cases were “receiving efficient treatment from our medical officers”.

While enjoining residents of the state not to panic, the governor, attributed the rise in confirmed cases to “increase pace of testing and immigrants coming into our country through our land borders”.

“My dear people of Ogun State, we have all seen the astronomical rise in the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in our country in the last one week.

“This, therefore, means that we must all continue to take cognizance of the health safety and recommendations we have issued earlier.

“It is important that we do not allow continued surge in cases and the attendance risk of continued community transmission.

‘We will once again encourage our people to adhere to all health safety measures put in place to flatten the curve in the country, in general, and in Ogun State in particular through social distancing; washing of hands with soaps and use of alcohol base sanitiSer where there is no water,” Governor Abiodun added.

On the second week of the lockdown, the governor said, “Ogun will continue to have a window of break on Monday, 27th April, 2020 from 7.00am to 2.00pm and other days as may be reviewed and communicated in due course”.
