Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said Nigeria would receive her own doses of the COVAX vaccine soon.

The WTO boss was reacting to an announcement by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) that Ghana had taken delivery of 600,000 doses of COVAX vaccines.

“Very happy to see first delivery of #COVAX supported vaccines to Ghana. Excited to see more countries following. Nigeria’s supplies should be on their way soon. No trade restrictions and bureaucracy get in the way. @WTO must be part of the solution”, she said on Twitter.

Okonjo-Iweala who sits on the board of GAVI did not disclose how many doses Nigeria will get. But in a statement, the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 said that the country will take delivery of about four million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

On Wednesday, GAVI said about 600,000 doses of COVAX vaccines were shipped to Ghana, the first West African country to receive the vaccines.
