COVID-19 lockdown: 11 killed, 44 injured in Ogun road crashes

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) says  11 persons died and 44 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, in various road crashes, in the state, during the lockdown between April 4 and May 8, 2020 on account of the spreading Coronavirus pandemic.

Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, said this in a statement, on Monday.

Akinbiyi explained that during the period, the corps apprehended 345 road traffic offenders in the state.

He also said 972 vehicles were turned back at various border towns in the state during the period.

Giving the breakdown, Akinbiyi said the 41 road crashes recorded within the period involved 15 private cars, 11 private buses, 18 commercial cars, two motorcycles, 12 passenger buses, four medium trucks and five heavy trucks.

According to him, out of the reported 41 crashes, eight were fatal, 20 were serious, while the remaining 13 were minor.

Akinbiy’s words, “During this period, 212 persons were involved in road traffic crashes, out of which 44 persons, comprising 30 males and 14 females, sustained varying degrees of injury.

“Eleven persons, comprising 10 adult males and one female child, were killed, while 157 persons were rescued unhurt.”
