Anthony Iwuoma

Four family members of  the Bayelsa  State index case of Covid-19, have tested positive for the virus, thus bringing the state’s tally to five confirmed cases.

The Co-chairman of the Bayelsa State Task Force on Covid-19 and Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Inodu Nathaniel, confirmed this in a press conference in Yenagoa on Friday.

They were among the 204 confirmed cases of the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control, NCDC, released on Thursday night.

Nathaniel explained that the four positive cases were among seven samples sent to the Irrua Reference Laboratory for the test.

He noted that they had been placed on self-isolation at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, NDUTH Isolation Centre for close monitoring and treatment.

”All the contacts of the confirmed cases will adequately line listed and followed up, including necessary environmental decontamination. Samples will be collected from their high-risk contacts while risk communication and community engagement will continue unabated as usual, ” he said.

He added, however, that other samples taken for testing, including a health worker’s, came out negative.
