COVID-19: Ebonyi suspends LG Election, reinstates ban on religious activities

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has announced the suspension of the state local Government Election slated to hold on the 24th April 2020 across the 13 local government areas of the state.

In a similar vein, the state government has reinstated the ban on religious gathering in the state.

Umahi announced this on Saturday in a State wide radio/television broadcast to the people on  the programmes and activities of the government in preventing the corona virus from entering the state.

He urged the citizenry to rise up to the challenges posed by the attendant consequences of the pandemic known as COVID-19.

“I hereby direct all political activities with regards to local government election  be suspended in line with the “COVID- 19 law”
“All activities regarding local government Election slated for April 24th 2020 is hereby suspended.”

Umahi equally announced ban on movement of commercial motorcycles popularly known as “Okada” in the state especially in the night insisting “if you must move you must move in the day.”

Speaking against the backdrop of the one week lifting of burial programmes  in the state slated between 9th-20th April, Umahi disclosed that the state government has gotten a comprehensive list of those involved in burial activities.

According to him, “security Agencies would monitor such burial, ensure that precautionary measures are adhered to in line with COVID-19 law, not more than 20 persons in attendance
“Commissioner for Information and security Agencies would monitor burials slated between 9th-12th April 2020, ensure total compliance with COVID-19 law,” he insisted.
