Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, FWACS, Dr. Shima Gyoh has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to go beyond the ordinary and prepare for the unknown in respect of the Coronavirus otherwise known as Covid – 19.

Gyoh who spoke on the ethics of the medical profession on the occasion of the induction of 45 graduating medical students of the Benue State University at the College of Health Sciences Auditorium today (Thursday), said he would prefer a situation where Nigeria would be like developed countries where citizens would fend for themselves for about two weeks should Covid-19 become a pandemic.

Gyoh who prayed for Coronavirus not to reach that level asked thus : “What would we do should the disease become a pandemic and we have to stay indoors for two weeks with all that we need?”.

He said developed countries in Europe and other places may be able to cope with such a situation but Nigeria may not and urged the people and government of Nigeria to think about that.

Dr. Gyoh who is an expert in many areas of medicine, advised the inducted 45 medical doctors to note that patients would always be their priority and not themselves.

“You must know that the patient’s interests take priority over yours; when there is conflict of interest, then problems arise”, he added and pointed out that attending to patients behind schedule could lead to unforeseen circumstances and sometimes  litigation.

According to him, when medical doctors attend to patients in a hurry, there are bound to be issues like lack of record on temperature which many doctors expect nurses to do for them.

Vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Msugh Moses Kembe, in an address said medical students in the institution were stagnated for over 12 years and that they started graduating when he became vice chancellor.

He said 272 medical students have graduated under him and expressed appreciation to the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, for providing enabling environment for the university to compete favorably with others.
